Understanding the Carbon Impact of Shipping

Shipping is an integral part of our supply chain at Whitestone, but it also represents a major contributor to our overall carbon footprint. Understanding the environmental impact of the various transportation modes is crucial to making sustainable shipping decisions.

The Significance of Mode Choice

Freight transport in the U.S. is responsible for 16 percent of corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, ranking it as one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation. This is a significant percentage, which means that the choices we make in shipping have real environmental consequences. By selecting transportation modes that minimize emissions, we can directly influence Whitestone’s sustainability efforts.

Consider this: the emissions associated with air freight are substantial. According to the EDF Green Freight Handbook, air transport emits 47 times more greenhouse gases per ton-mile compared to cargo shipments by sea. This means that opting for slower but more efficient modes, such as ocean or rail freight, can make a huge difference in our emissions profile.

The Most Environmentally Friendly Shipping Modes:

Ocean Freight

For long-distance shipping, ocean freight is a sustainable choice, emitting fewer greenhouse gasses per ton-mile. While slower than air freight, it is a cost-effective option for non-urgent deliveries.

Ground Shipping

Domestically, ground shipping offers a balance of cost efficiency and lower environmental impact. With modern fuel-efficient technologies, trucks can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Air Freight

Although fast, air freight has a higher carbon footprint, in fact 8-10x higher than ground transit. We encourage its use only for time-sensitive deliveries due to its environmental cost.

Rail Transport

One of the most efficient land transport modes. Rail emits less CO₂ compared to road transport and is a strong alternative when available.

Combined Transport

Using a mix of rail, sea, and road shipping can reduce emissions compared to relying solely on one mode. Strategic planning to optimize routes and modes can lower our carbon footprint.

Every shipment has a carbon footprint, but the impact varies significantly by transportation mode. At Whitestone, we care about sustainability, which is why we measure and manage our emissions carefully. We know that air freight has the highest carbon impact, while ocean and ground shipping are more eco-friendly options.

By sharing these insights, we empower our customers to make informed shipping decisions that reduce emissions and help everyone win—because making smarter choices benefits both your business and the planet.
